Odds and Ends
These are books which I’ve largely made it through, but which were never reviewed or marked as finished. Discovered while trawling through my Kindle library, looking for overlooked things. All of these have been returned to the giant library in the cloud.
Note: OPD is “Original Purchase Date”
How to Be an Adult: A Handbook on Psychological and Spiritual Integration, David Richio
Note to those who know me well: truth be told, I have read this; I just wasn’t reading it very closely. Reset and exiled to the very bottom of my Kindle. This is a coaching project. OPD: March, 2019 (100% and 0% read)
The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni
Technically, this is a re-read. Like the book above it, except in this case an OD project. Inspired, no doubt, by work. OPD: Unknown, paperback March, 2017. (8% re-read)
The Art of Thinking In Systems, Steven Schuster
Apparently finished but never reviewed; a perennial favorite topic and short at 89 pgs. OPD: Unknown. (99% read)
10% Happier, Dan Harris.
Got a ton out of reading this, as well as using the app. Mostly finished, never reviewed. OPD; Unknown (99% read)
Trust Leadership: Take Responsibility, Use Success and Transform, Andrea Reibmayr
Or, alternatively don’t trust the leadership if that seems like the appropriate response to a situation. I attended a seminar with Andrea at one point. Mostly finished, never reviewed. OPD: December, 2017 (99% read)
Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, Lindsay C. Gibson
Don't ask, I’m not pointing fingers at anyone. This came out of a conversation with someone a couple of year ago. Clearly the impetus to finish it died at some point. OPD: July, 2020. (54% read)
Sensemaking: The Power of the Humanities In The Age of the Algorithm, Christian Madsbjerg
A leftover from my ODKM graduate program, probably. Finished, never reviewed. OPD: August, 2017. (100% read)
The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty, Dan Ariely
This may have had something to do with a prior line of work? Interesting to see how or if this holds up in light of recent events. Re-read. OPD September 2017 (100% and 1%)
Lingering
These are books I don’t quite know what to do with. I had some impulse to buy and read them, at some point. For whatever reason they’ve never really taken off.
The books here will stay on the Kindle until the end of the year, at which point they should either have been read or will be moved to the “quit” column.
Turning Pro, Steven Pressfield
Perhaps an appropriate read for me in the post-retirement era. OPD May, 2019 (9% read)
The Omni-Americans, Albert Murray
No idea, but originated from my involuntary Covid sabbatical. OPD September 2020 (7% read)
Pacification In Algeria, David Galula
I (continue to) blame the Army War College for this. OPD unknown. (6% read)
The Warrior Ethos, Steven PressfiTheld
I don’t even remember starting this, TBH. OPD March 2020 (9% read)
The Jesuit Guide To (Almost) Everything, James Martin.
Not 100% sure about this, either. OPD January 2021 (4%)
The Roots of Evil, John Kekes
My brief memory of this was of it being impenetrable. It could be a case of dramatic intellectual overreach. OPD March 2021 (4%)
Connect: Building Exceptional Relationships With Family, Friends and Colleagues, David Bradford and Carole Robin, PhD
Certainly something that came out of the coaching world. OPD February 2021 (2%)
The Folly of Fools, Robert Tivers
“The logic of deceit and self-deception in human life.” How could I have resisted? OPD October 2020 (3%)
Unmasked, Andy Ngo
A buy driven by media coverage of Ngo, which was so uniformly condescending and suspicious I had see for myself. Or not. OPD February 2021 (2%)
The Road To Better Habits, Darius Foroux
The blurb said Covid-19, distracted, something something. OPD November 2021 (13%)
Military Misfortunes: The Anatomy of Failure, Elliot Cohen and John Gooch
Normally an irresistible subject, packaged into an evidently very resistible book. OPD January 2022 (12%)
Saladin The Strategist, Ben Duval
I saw this when it was being promoted. History plus strategy should be compelling. Should. OPD May 2022 (6%)
